Belize In October: Conch Season Opens + Peak Slow Season
Thinking of visiting Belize in October? You might be wondering if the weather will get in the way, if places will be closed, or if it’s even worth the trip.
October is the heart of hurricane season and also the peak of the slow season. That can sound discouraging, but there’s more to the story.
I live here, and I’ll give you the real picture. Don’t worry, I won’t just share the pretty highlights — you’ll get the truth and some insider tips too.
You’ll find out what the weather is really like, which spots stay open, and the best foods to try, including fresh conch that’s in season this month.
Here’s exactly how to make the most of Belize in October.

Belize Weather In October
If I could use one word to describe weather in October, it would be fickle. It's the second-to-last month of hurricane season which ends in November. Historically speaking, the most recent storms and hurricanes have hit in October.
Speaking from experience as a local living here, I can say that it gets really hot with humid, and hot days followed by rainy nights. And if a tropical depression or storm forms, that means constant rain. Otherwise, it's just quick showers.
We can't predict the weather but be prepared for rain and some complimentary mosquitos.
What The Locals Say
Weather apps just don't work in Belize. There is, however, a National Meteorological Service that is the closest thing to weather forecast. But, even locals find this to be inaccurate.

Prices In October
October prices are equally as good as September's. Being the peak of slow season, you'll also see many resorts offering a 4th night free and other similar discounts.
Many hotels have a promotion section on their website or special discounted rates on their rates section. They explicitly list low and high season rates. If not, you can message them to inquire.
Unfortunately tours, shuttles and restaurants don't normally have discounts.
High Season

Low Season

What October Is Actually Like
Conch Season
October 1st is officially the day conch season opens with the closing date being June 30th. Enjoy ceviche, fritters and soup.
Peak Slow Season
October is peak slow season even more so than September. Many restaurants and bars close down for renovation and holiday break.
Hurricane Month
Historically, hurricanes tend to land in October especially as of late in 2024. Expect surprise rain and mosquitos tagging along.
Festivals In October
The only local festival in October is Belize Birding Festival which takes place in Punta Gorda Town in Southern Belize.
Besides this festival, October is extremely quiet. It's so quiet that a handful of popular restaurants close down completely for a month or more.
Things To Do In October
It would be remiss of me to not tell you that peak rainy season means you might encounter flooding in October. If you plan on doing rainforest activities like going hiking, I would highly suggest doing a little research to see if the site is not flooded.
Belize Audubon Society manages some of the most popular national parks. Their Facebook page is reliable source of information. Any attraction near a river is subject to flooding, so that's very important to keep in mind.
With that said, water activities are open for business. If it rains a bit, it won't affect your snorkeling at popular spots like Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Rivers might be affected by the rain though — the water won't be as clear as they would.

Recommended Activities
Mosquitos & Sand Flies
It would be unfair for me not to mention mosquitos and sand flies. Depending on where you decide to vacation, these critters can be an annoyance.
If you plan to stay in the jungle, bring mosquito repellent. Resorts and boutique lodges usually provide it, but it’s good to have your own just in case.
The good news is that mosquitos will be much less of a problem within the towns and villages because the government sprays monthly. A truck literally drives through every street spraying an environmentally friendly fog of some sort. I can't confirm how safe it is though. It works for sure.
Sargassum In October
October continues with the sargassum problem. It's an ongoing problem that is a cat-and-mouse game played with the local town/village councils. Yes, it sucks, and it smells bad, but this issue plagues the entire Caribbean coast — some more than others.
You can follow the Sargassum Forecast by the National Meteorological Service of Belize. This can help you avoid certain areas that are affected more. In general, there are still beaches that don't get affected, and the more luxurious resorts do a very good job of cleaning up daily.
Final Thoughts
To be honest, visiting Belize in October wouldn't be my first choice. But, if you're prepared to deal with the possibility of a storm or hurricane in exchange for lower prices and smaller crowds, then October is for you.
Come prepared for the weather, pack your mosquito repellent, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most local and colorful experiences Belize has to offer.
