The title sums it up pretty well. I hitchhike to Tepic, Nayarit with a weird bus driver that's seen some crazy shit. This is my first time getting a free ride in a bus at least. My route was very simple: Mazatlán, Sinaloa -> Tepic, Nayarit which is ~275km

Back to solo hitchhiking

I kick off at Mazatlán where I take a bus to the outskirts of the city. Mazatlán was the first city where I saw tourists, and I was really happy to experience touristy areas strangely lol. Seeing tourists around for the most part means it's safer to walk around.

Early in the morning, I left my host's house, said goodbye and took a bus to the furthest village outside the city. The village was El Castillo. Here I stopped around a local gas station and found a little shop and asked an old lady if I could take a piece of cardboard from her shop. She said yes, and she even gave me a free bottle of water :)

Entering a dangerous area

I was so happy, and she warned me to watch out for the people in the area because they were known to be bad and that she had even been robbed. I knew now not to take news like this lightly, so I was super aware and never stayed alone at any given time. There were motorbikes everywhere in this area and I kept staring at them, so they knew I was aware of them. I could definitely feel the tension.

I learned a valuable lesson the last time, so I applied it here. This time around I wasn't getting any rides, so I started walking which is what I usually do. Walking was also a good idea to get out of that dangerous zone. So I walked for about two kilometers. No ride... No cars stopped for me. They cheered me on but no one stopped. The area was definitely showing its effects.

Sketchy neighborhood

Was I screwed and destined to be robbed again? This was a super sketchy neighborhood. I can see the poverty and the graffiti on the wall screams "we rob you here!"

After two hours of waiting, I was saved! And by a bus driver. Go fcking figure. He asked where I was going, and I told him Tepic. He said he can drop me off at the next city, but he ended up taking me all the way to my destination since we had good conversation.

Things start to get weird

But during the bus ride, he was acting really weird. He insisted on me showing him my phone and having me trade my iPhone for his Android phone which I told him wasn't worth it for me because it's too big. Big phones cause you to get mugged.

Anyway, the weird part was that he was bragging about the pictures he took with the badass camera. He ended up scrolling through dozens of his porn videos lol. Who the fck was this guy?

So I brushed that off and even went to sleep for a while and noticed he kept looking back to see if I was asleep, so I tried to stay awake. Luckily everything played out well, and he gave me a ride at a gas station which was perfect! I try to always land at a gas station or an Oxxo shop which means I can stay late there in case I need to wait for my host or for a bus.

Some crazy stories

What I forgot to mention was that, this guy told me a really crazy story. He was once held up by the mafia while driving towards Oaxaca and two of the robbers chose the most attractive girls in the bus they stopped and raped them in front of the bus while everyone was still in the bus. This was borderline disgusting. His facial expressions while he was telling the story made my stomach turn. He said he was even shot before that ordeal.

That's what I get for asking him about his craziest story as a bus driver. He had been doing this job for almost 30 years!

After arriving Tepic, I stayed with the coolest couchsurfer who happen to be a surgeon. He was 45 years, had a hot dermatologist girlfriend. His taste in music was amazing too. He took me to the local fair and even left me his house while he went off for the weekend to Guadalajara. What a champ!!! That's one for the books lol.

I also remember him sharing many songs with me one night we were hanging out. One song in specific was Tu falta de querer by Mon Laferte (Y0utube Link). The way he talked about this song and how he lost his wife made me feel so many emotions. I think that's the first time I really felt what love really means.

Thanks doc for showing me your heart. That's why I travel, for moments like these. Nothing else.
